Treatment of Burn scars is usually quite tricky. Hypertrophic scars are in a sense easier to treat and deformities caused by scars can be corrected. A number of non-surgical ‘medical’ therapies can also be used for the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars.
If the correction is purely cosmetic, it depends on the size of the area burnt and the depth of scarring. A number of scar revision techniques can be used for the treatment of burn scars, but again success depends on the type and age of scarring.
Here are the number of options generally available for treatment of scars:
* Moisturising oils (acute scars)
* Pressure dressings and spliniting (acute scars)
* Surgical correction if deformities and skin flaps and grafts (Should be done by an experienced surgeon. Even then may result in keloid formation)
* Corticosteroid injection, repeated every few weeks (for keloids and hypertrophic scars)
* Various LASER therapies (variable success)
