What are the different types of skin cancer?

Skin cancer is broadly divided into Melanoma skin cancer and Non-melanoma skin cancer (everything else that isn’t a melanoma). You can read all about melanoma by clicking here.
 
 
There are various types of non-melanoma skin cancer, the commonest being:
                Basal cell carcinoma, &
                Squamous cell carcinoma ( including actinic keratosis and Bowen’s disease)
 
Most non-melanoma skin cancers are relatively less serious compared to melanoma and do not tend to spread to the rest of the body, especially if detected early and treated.
 

What are the early signs/ symptoms of skin cancer?

Skin cancer can present in various ways. Symptoms of skin cancer include any new growth or lump in the skin that is getting bigger and not healing spontaneously. Skin cancer can also present as ulcers, sores, recurrent scabs, etc. Consult Dr. Attili, if you are worried about skin cancer.

How do you get skin cancer? 

Most skin cancers are acquired from exposure to ultraviolet rays, either artificially (sun beds) or by excessive sunlight exposure. There are however a number of other factors that determine whether one would get skin cancer including:
  • Fair skin type
  • Medications that suppress the immune system
  • Family History of skin cancer
